SCHOLARSHIP WINNER
Garrit Austin Sproull of the Harrison Central Future Farmers of America (FFA) in Ohio was named the winner of the Swin Production-Entrepreneurship Proficiency Award Program at the 85th National FFA Convention in Indianapolis, IN. The award is given to a student who has shown outstanding achievement in agribusiness gained through the establishment of a business, working for an existing business, volunteering, or gaining hand-on career experience in other ways. This award is sponsored by LA-CO® Industries, Inc's ALL-WEATHER® brand as part of their pledge to continually support the agricultural industry.
Sproull breeds sows to product and sell quality market hogs. He was nine years old when he brought his first market hog to the county fair. After a disappointing litter of pigs on his first try, Sproull made improvements through better genetics, facilities, and management. Now, nearly 70% of his pigs place in the top five classes.
Sproull and three other FFA members from various chapters, were selected to compete for this award. Each finalist received a plaque and a $500. As the national winner, Garrit received an additional $500 at a special ceremony that took place at the convention.
